Ankle recovery has been slow and steady for Patricia Niles, who took a fall while on a family vacation in Gatlinburg back in March of 2019. After she returned home, her family doctor gave her several methods to try and alleviate her pain. When nothing worked he referred her to Dr. Lamay. That is when she finally was ordered an MRI, which revealed she had a tear in 2 different tendons.
Mrs. Niles was placed a boot that she wore every day up until surgery in February of 2020. During the surgery the doctor discovered that the peroneal longus, a major muscle in the lower leg, had more damage than the MRI had showed. He had to cut out part of the tendon and reconstruct a new tendon with a stint, which meant her therapy would be long and extensive. During this time COVID-19 happened, therefore she couldn’t start her therapy when the doctors would have liked.
Due to the high risk of catching the virus, Elite has taken patient safety to be one of its top priorities. Mrs. Niles recognized the efforts taken and states “I continually tell the team my concerns and they come up with a game plan to help with that. This group of people really cares about their patients and the patient’s recovery/safety.”
Mrs. Niles has been out of work since her surgery in February. She plans to return to work in August with some restrictions. “My Elite team has told me to not push it and only do what feels comfortable. I was walking and doing a lot of baking before my injury, and since I have not started back because my foot and ankle hurt after prolonged standing. The Elite team is working on that.” Sleeping through the night and walking without pain are Mrs. Niles top two goals. Elite listens to the patient and his or her concerns, develops a plan and then tells the patient how to proceed to reduce pain and discomfort. “I had foot surgery and Jason noticed that I was walking with the surgical foot toes pointed in. He put tape on my foot and that has corrected the pointed toe and decreased some of the pain and swelling. These guys really care about their patients. They have given me tools and information to work on at home, as well as a routine specific to my needs…”when I go in for visits. Let’s be honest, no one really wants to go to PT but when the staff at Elite care and work as hard as you do for your recovery you, want to go.”
