The rehabilitation process does not end when you walk out the clinic door. You will have home work. Once your hip pain evaluation has been performed and your case has been established, you will be assigned a series of stretching and strengthening exercises that will initially be performed in the Elite clinic. You will be instructed and guided through these exercises by one of our trained staff who will ensure that you are performing all exercises with the proper form and technique. When your clinician is confident that you are performing these activities properly, you will be given a customized HEP. An HEP also known as a Home Exercise Program will consist of some or all of the stretches and exercises that are performed in clinic for you to perform on your days outside the clinic. Frequency of your HEP will be determined by your therapist. Some of the home exercises that you can expect for trochanteric bursitis are as follows.
- Iliotibial band stretches
- Hamstring stretches
- Eccentric hip abduction
Proper adherence to your HEP and compliance with in clinic sessions will allow for optimal results and a much quicker recovery. During the recovery process it will also be important to avoid activities that can further aggravate your symptoms. Some things that may increase pain and inflammation around the trochanteric bursa are increased pressure to the region from sleeping on your side, crossing your legs while sitting for long periods, and high impact activities such as running and jumping. Your Dr. may also suggest that you take anti-inflammatory medications for a short time to help get your symptoms under control. Applying ice packs to the region can also be an effective strategy for decreasing pain and inflammation around the region.
Studies have shown that physical therapy can be a highly effective treatment and can prevent recurrence of trochanteric bursitis symptoms when performed consistently.
