Hand Pain-At Home

Hand pain can be more limiting than we realize until we have “hand pain”. Treating hand pain at home, you will be given a home exercise program (HEP) after your first or second visit at physical therapy. The HEP is designed to make you an active part of your recovery after your injury/diagnosis/surgery. You will be given tips on what to do outside of the clinic to reduce your pain. These tips would include: what to avoid, paraffin, instructions for braces or icing, paraffin and a printout of your exercises to perform. Your printout will provide pics/ illustrations along with written instructions to make you confident performing them safely on your own. This HEP will assist in the recovery process for a more speedy return to normal function of your hand following your injury.

Examples of some of the exercises you may be provided:

  • Gripping exercises
  • Wrist extensor/flexor stretches
  • Wrist extension and flexion using small weights or theraband
  • Icing 10 minutes after exercise
  • Scar massage post surgery
