Factors Contributing to Fall Risk

As individuals age, fall risk and the fear of falling increases significantly. According to the National Institute on Aging, “more than one in three people age 65 years or older falls each year”. The fear of falling can lead to limitations in daily activities such as walking, performing dressing and bathing tasks, going up and down stairs, or participating in social activities out in the community.

There can be several different factors that can contribute to increased risk of falls such as:

    • Diabetes
    • Heart Disease
    • Neuropathy (decreased sensation in feet)
    • Dizziness
    • Safety hazards in home: rugs, small pets, children, limited lighting
    • Hearing Loss
    • Vision Loss
    • Muscle Weakness

If a person falls, their risk of falling again increases. They can also face further medical problems due to a fall such as:
