Vertigo-Balance-In-Clinic Therapy

If you have been experiencing some balance deficits for various reasons which can include, a traumatic brain injury, vertigo and/or general weakness, physical therapy can be beneficial for decreasing your fall risk and helping you to gain confidence to perform all of your usual daily activities. After an evaluation to determine where your balance deficits lie, your treatment in physical therapy can include the following:

Vestibular maneuvers– Treatment for BPPV (a cause of some vertigo) can include the Epley or Semont maneuvers which are a series of positional changes to move crystals in your inner ear to eliminate or decrease dizziness. Sometimes visual tracking exercises will be utilized to increase tolerance to dizziness.

Vestibular balance and exercise challenges– Physical therapy can provide the appropriate exercises with safe supervision to improve loss of balance response.

Assistive device training– If a therapist determines that you would be safer with an assistive device (AD) they may recommend a walker or cane and teach you how to ambulate and use stairs safely with the AD.

Physical therapy can help you overcome balance problems, help you compensate for imbalance and maintain physical activity vital for health. It has been shown that the Epley or Semont maneuvers can cure Veritgo in 1-2 visits.
